瓮城设置兴盛于五代和北宋期间，在公元999年至1078年，曾公亮所著的《武经总要》中，第一次出现了对瓮城的记述“其城外瓮城，或圆或方，视地形为之，高厚与城等，惟偏开一门，左右各随其便。”上有堡楼，西北合围，东居门洞，上有雉堞。在冷兵器时代可以发挥重要作用。

Wengcheng was built during the Five Dynasties and the Northern Song Dynasty, between 999 and 1078 AD, in the Wujing Summary wrote by Zeng Gongliang, for the first time, an account of Wengcheng appeared: “Wengcheng maybe is circular or quadrate, it is depend on landform, the height and thickness is same with the city, it has a door, which can open on the left or right. The top has Baolou, the northwest is close to the perimeter. The east located in Mendong and the top has Zhidie.”
